Job purpose:
The Health and Safety Coordinator supports the Compliance Manager by ensuring that all sites within the region adhere to health and safety legislation, company policies, and best practices. The role involves providing expert advice, guidance and support to staff and departments, conducting regular site audits, and fostering a culture of safety across the organization.
Key Accountabilities:
Health and Safety Advice and Guidance
- Act as the first point of contact for health and safety delivery across the region, supporting the appointed Responsible Persons.
- Provide clear, accurate, and practical advice to staff, management, and departments.
- Interpret and communicate relevant health and safety legislation and industry standards.
- Assist in the development and implementation of site-specific health and safety procedures and plans.
- Chair Health and Safety Committee meetings.
Audits and Inspections
- Plan and conduct health and safety audits at regional sites in line with the audit schedule.
- Identify hazards, risks, and non-compliance issues, and provide practical recommendations to address them.
- Ensure that corrective actions are completed within agreed timeframes and escalate unresolved issues to the Compliance Manager.
- Maintain accurate records of audits, inspections, and follow-up actions.
Training and Awareness
- Assist in the delivery of health and safety training to staff, ensuring awareness of their responsibilities.
- Support the induction process by providing health and safety information to new employees.
- Promote a positive health and safety culture through campaigns, communications, and engagement activities.
- Risk Assessments and Incident Management
- Support site teams in completing and reviewing risk assessments for tasks, equipment, and premises/ properties.
- Assist with the investigation of accidents, incidents, and near misses, identifying root causes and preventative measures.
- Ensure incident reports are completed accurately and shared with relevant stakeholders.
Compliance and Reporting
- Monitor compliance with health and safety policies, procedures, and statutory requirements.
- Support the Compliance Manager with data collection and the preparation of health and safety reports.
- Keep up to date with changes in legislation and communicate their impact to the Compliance Manager and site teams.
Liaison and Collaboration
- Work closely with site teams, department heads, and contractors and regulatory bodies e.g. Local Fire Authorities.
- Collaborate with the other regional Health and Safety Coordinator to share best practices and drive continuous improvement.
Essential Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (or equivalent) is essential.
- Experience in a similar role, covering multiple sites, is highly desirable.
- Membership of a professional body such as IOSH is advantageous.
- Full UK driving license and willingness to travel across the region.
- Strong knowledge of health and safety legislation, codes of practice, and standards.
- Experience in construction and knowledge of CDM Regulations, as well as Loler and Puwer regulations would be advantageous.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and engage stakeholders at all levels.
- Detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Proactive and self-motivated, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Competent in using health and safety management systems.
